In this modern world of art, an eccentric personality is met with classic and contemporary elements with Kenyatta Crisp. As an artist, he began his study of fine art and photography back in 2012. The Cleveland, OH native is currently a mix-media artist and the owner of Crisp Photography Ltd — with all curations under “28karatblack.” Crisp’s range in photography consists of portraiture, film, contemporary and fin art elements — both personal and conceptual. His work reflects Black/African American art culture but also holds an ominous unique approach to silhouettes. With blank faces and void like emptiness, these silhouettes hold a representation of black joy in the likeness of despair and darkness.

“The intent for presenting these images the way I did was to influence my audience viewing experience through a racialized lens. Specifically, creating a dark, haunting, and terrifying shadowy figure to represent how society views Black/African Americans. I call them the “Weusi,” or “Eusi, (Eh-oo-zee)”, which means “black, dark, or blackness” in KiSwahili.” –

Artists like Gordon Parks, Jamel Shabazz, Ming Smith, and Kara Walker have held a great influence on his style of portraiture and attention to detail behind the lens. He values classic tradition through the lens of representation. As an experienced collaborator, he seeks to expand talent by working with individuals across the region, who help shape the landscape of his mission. It is his continued hope to leave a legacy of the same impact in future projects.
