Room in the House -- Karamu House

With generous support from Cuyahoga County residents through a grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, and in partnership with Assembly for the Arts, Karamu House will offer 10 artist fellowship awards in 2024 – five (5) visual arts; five (5) performing arts. Fellowships will be awarded in June 2024. The goal of Room in the House is artistic growth and empowerment. To this end, Karamu is excited to provide a financial award to support artistic growth, and a platform for exposure –digital and in-person.

Application for the fellowship is open to artists who currently reside in Cuyahoga County with demonstrated commitment to their visual arts or performance-based practice. Each selected Room in the House artist will receive a monetary stipend ($5,000) and the opportunity to exhibit/perform – virtually and/or in-person based on Karamu availability. This is not a project-based grant. This an unrestricted grant award that can be used in any way that supports the artist’s work and practice.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

All applicants must use the provided Google form link to apply. Submission of the following in narrative form (unless specified) constitutes a COMPLETE application:

1.  Artistic Statement
2. Answers to the following questions:
   • a. Demographics: Name, Residential Address, Cell Phone Number, Email Address
   • b. Describe in narrative format how your artistic philosophy aligns to Karamu’s vision of honoring the Black experience through culturally and socially relevant work. (see Selection Process + Criteria section)
   • c. Describe in narrative format how the grant award will support your creative practice.
3. Link to a portfolio showcasing at least (3) examples of your art or (3) web-quality work samples. Samples can be submitted in the following formats:
   • Writing: doc, docx, pdf
   • Images: jpg, jpeg, png
   • Audio: m4a, mp3, wav, wma
   • Video: m4v, mov, mp4, mpg, wmv
4. Any additional information or supplementary material the selection panel should have to support your application and the alignment of your artistic work to Karamu’s vision?

NOTE: Artists who have received a Room in the House award in the past cannot apply.

ELIGIBILITY:
• The RITH Fellowship is open to individual artists and artist collectives that reside in Cuyahoga County.
• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
• Applicants cannot be staff or board members of Karamu House.
• Only one application per artist will be accepted. Artists applying as part of a collective will not be eligible to submit an individual application.

Info sessions are available during the application period. Info sessions will provide an opportunity for interested artists to review the application process and ask questions about preparing the application and/or the fellowship.
