Teaching Artist Job Description

MISSION:  FolukéARTS is a community-based organization based in Cleveland Ohio, whose focus is to strengthen and support underprivileged communities by providing access to performing arts, visual arts, and arts education. Our focus is at-risk Children, Youth, and Teens, and older adults.

The GOAL is to provide positive alternatives to negative behaviors by instilling discipline, self-pride and boosting self-confidence through self-expression and self-discovery, in addition to promoting academic achievements, socio-economic development, and community enhancement.

VISION: To provide multi-generational arts education services to the Greater Cleveland Area with a special commitment to the Cedar-Central 'Promise' Neighborhood.  To implement arts and culture activities that will develop positive community 'norms' through the belief that it takes a village to raise a child, and that the older people are keepers of the culture and must remain dynamic members of society to provide younger generations positive role models.

General Purpose

Foluké Cultural Arts is seeking dynamic, professional and experienced Teaching Artists with expertise in studio arts and arts integration to facilitate youth or art adult classes.  Notable considerations for candidates with experience in arts integration and expertise in multiple disciplines: Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Graphic Arts, Photography and Film.  Foluké Cultural Arts strives to utilize the arts as a conduit for academic achievements, social emotional health and overall well-being.  FolukéArts also embraces learners with no arts background just as readily as those with experience and formal training.

Essential Job Functions:

Teaching artists will work in cooperation with the Program Manager for Arts Education and staff to facilitate group classes and campus at Foluke Cultural Arts and various offsite residencies, including schools and community organizations.  Teaching Artists must be able to create quality lesson plans, create supply lists within budgetary restrictions and provide an outstanding arts experience for students.  Teaching Artists are responsible for the setup and cleanup of their studio spaces before and after classes as well as attendance and some student paperwork.

Performance opportunities also exists for performing artists to participate, upon request, in community and/or school presentations at special events.

Teaching Artist Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Education or Fine arts preferred.
  • Prevention Certification, Social Emotional Learning Certification, or Informed Trauma Certification a plus.
  • Experience and ability to teach you, as well as work collaboratively with fellow teaching artists and staff.
  • Must have experience teaching and/or working with diverse populations of youth and/or adults, and older adults.
  • Professional artistic training, background, and work demonstrated through work samples.
  • Ability to organize, implement and facilitate a high-quality learning environment.
  • Must be able to provide a lesson plan for the discipline you are applying for.
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to understand and comply with safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Must have a desire to work with youth, and/or older adults
  • Must have dependable transportation to access various sites.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision
  • Must demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm, punctuality, and dependability.

Teaching Artists Specs.

Type:  Part-time, Contract
Pay:    $50 per hour
Paid Training: $25 per hour
Schedule: (varies per assignment)
After School
Day Shift
Monday thru Thursday or Friday
Saturday (SaturdayARTS program)
Work Setting:  in-person, onsite (FolukeARTS location &various locations)
