With generous support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, Karamu House will offer 12 artist-focused residencies in 2019 – eight (8) visual arts; four (4) performing arts. The residency period is March 2019 – December 2019. The goal of Room in the House is for artists to leave Karamu’s residency as more empowered, independent artists. To this end, Karamu will activate creative and administrative spaces, provide technical support to performing artists and exhibition space for visual artists, and through partnership with Gordon Square Arts District – professional development for artists looking to build their business.
Application for the fellowship is open to Cleveland-based artists with demonstrated excellence in and commitment to their visual arts or performance-based work. Each selected Room in the House resident will receive a monetary stipend ($5,000 – visual; $3,000 – performing), and access for eight weeks to space at Karamu House to create, work administratively, and show/perform.
*Submit application for desired residency start date.*

A small selection committee comprised of members of Karamu’s lead staff, board of directors, and community artist/stakeholders will comprise the selection panel and make the residency decisions. The chosen resident artists will demonstrate excellence through artistic rigor, ability and intent, as well as align to Karamu’s vision of honoring the African-American experience through culturally and socially relevant work.
Applying artists should submit a completed application with all support materials to: AShareef@karamuhouse.org.
