The Ohio Newsroom is seeking a Reporter/Producer to join this new, ambitious effort to expand reporting and news coverage throughout Ohio.
The Ohio Newsroom isn't a place or a product. It's a promise to strengthen Ohio’s news ecosystem with fresh ideas, more resources, and deeper collaboration. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Reporter/Producer will support this exciting new initiative.
Ohio's public radio stations are vibrant and vital assets for their communities, and together they serve every corner of the state. The Ohio Newsroom stations are in Toledo, Youngstown, Dayton, Akron, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. The Reporter/Producer will create interviews and narrated feature-length content for radio and digital platforms to be distributed to The Ohio Newsroom (TON) member stations.
In this role, you will create and curate high quality journalism for radio and digital platforms to be distributed to The Ohio Newsroom (TON) member stations. This work will include producing interviews and reporting narrated feature-length news for the daily segment with particular attention to the state’s news deserts. The Reporter/Producer will research stories that matter to Ohioans across the state, and report on them by traveling to Ohio’s news deserts. You’ll get a chance to pursue under-told stories you’re passionate about and do the sort of enterprise reporting that gets past soundbites and headlines to illuminate the core issues at the heart of the news. As part of a team, you will establish and maintain news sources and community contacts, and gather, edit and mix audio and voice reports for distribution on all public radio stations in the state.
Qualified candidates will have radio and digital production skills, including audio editing and social media engagement. The candidate should also have strong verbal and written communication, decision making and problem-solving skills, and be able to travel to reporting sites across the state of Ohio as needed. A crisp and clear broadcast writing style and a thorough, comprehensive and engaging writing style for the web is preferred. Given the nature of the position, you can live anywhere in Ohio. We will provide a workspace within one of Ohio's public radio newsrooms.
A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or a related field, and two to three years of journalism experience working in multiple media platforms is preferred, though equivalent experience in related fields and education will be considered. The salary range for this position begins at $50,000 and is commensurate with experience.
