NOTICE OF JOB OPENING

Education Reporter

Reporter/Producer wanted to cover education for Top 20 market public radio/TV station. Ours is a nurturing, innovative news organization in need of a talented, energetic journalist who is able and anxious to do in-depth reporting and analysis of state and local education issues: Pre-K through life-long learning.

In our coverage area, you’ll find resource-strapped districts trapped in what the state calls “academic distress,” some of the wealthiest and most acclaimed public schools in the country and everything in between. There are highly regarded private schools, strong networks of parochial schools, large state universities, prestigious small colleges and under-recognized career technical schools. Overlay all that with decades old fault lines of racial and economic inequality.

Pretty much every issue facing American education is playing out right here – and our audience wants to know what’s going on and why. So if you can break daily news, explain public policy debates and humanize complex questions with feature stories that touch the concerns of our diverse communities, you should apply. Some travel, mostly to the state capital and to professional conferences, required.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience and skill at writing, research, interviewing, story planning and development
  • Demonstrated multiple media broadcast and digital production skills
  • Full-time journalism experience, preferably in broadcast journalism
  • Experience producing in-depth reports about complex subjects, providing analysis and interpretation
  • Ability to report live from the field
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred.
