Deputy Editor- Engaged Journalism
Ideastream Public Media, a Cleveland-based multiple media organization and home to Ohio’s largest NPR, PBS and classical radio stations, is building on its recent merger with WKSU and expanding its trusted, in-depth, high-quality local news and information service to 22 counties in Northeast Ohio. As part of that expansion, Ideastream seeks a passionate and self-motivated journalism professional with a love for community and an appetite for storytelling to serve as Deputy Editor- Engaged Journalism (Deputy Editor). Reporting to the Director of Engaged Journalism, the Deputy Editor is responsible for the direction and management of Health and Engaged Journalism team members, leads day-to-day editorial decision-making for Reporters and creates and supervises the creation of high-quality content for all Ideastream Public Media platforms. This position will collaborate across departments to develop content initiatives that stand to maximize reach to, engagement of and impact upon target audience segments especially people with different urban, rural and international lived experiences. You will also assist the Director of Engaged Journalism with community-related initiatives, including developing responsive content and distributing it to relevant audiences through Ideastream and partner communication channels. The Deputy Editor will write and edit copy following AP style and SEO best practices, and gather and analyze content user data to inform editorial decisions and approaches to storytelling.
Qualified candidates will be familiar with current production management software, content management systems, digital asset management systems, editing systems, and a broad range of production equipment, and Microsoft Office. Candidates will be knowledgeable of multiple media production (video, radio, digital) and media production, and able to work with media, university and community partners. The candidate should also have strong verbal and written communication, decision making and problem-solving skills, and demonstrated writing, editing, and proofreading skills for all platforms.
A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, seven to ten years of journalism and reporting experience including managing productions in a multiple media platform environment and three to five years of supervisory experience is preferred, though equivalent experience in related fields and education will be considered. The salary range for this position begins at $71,000 and is commensurate with experience.
