Ideastream Public Media, a Cleveland-based multiple media organization and home to Ohio’s largest NPR, PBS and classical radio stations, continues to expand its trusted, in-depth, high-quality local news and information service to 22 counties in Northeast Ohio. As part of that expansion, Ideastream seeks a passionate and self-motivated journalism professional with a love for community and an appetite for storytelling to serve as Deputy Editor-News (Deputy Editor). Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Deputy Editor is responsible for supervising the creation of high-quality content for all Ideastream Public Media platforms. This position will guide, support and advance content creation with an emphasis on elevating innovation, presentation to and resonance with audiences. This position will be responsible for the direction and management, along with one other Deputy Editor, of news team members covering specific beats in Northeast Ohio. The Deputy Editor will be a motivator and collaborator whose mission is to help content creators do their best work. The Deputy Editor will collaborate across departments and work with managers to ensure comprehensive coverage needs are met for the entire region. The Deputy Editor will write and edit copy following AP style and SEO best practices, and gather and analyze content user data to inform editorial decisions and approaches to storytelling.
Qualified candidates will be familiar with current production management software, content management systems, digital asset management systems, editing systems, and a broad range of production equipment, and the Microsoft 365 suite. Candidates will be knowledgeable of multiple media production (radio, digital, video) and media production, and able to work with media, university and community partners. The candidate should also have strong verbal and written communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills and demonstrated writing, editing and proofreading skills for all platforms.
A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, seven to ten years of journalism and reporting experience including managing productions in a multiple media platform environment and three to five years of supervisory experience is preferred, though an equivalent of experience in related fields and education will be considered. The salary range for this position begins at $73,000 and is commensurate with experience.
