The Cleveland Institute of Music is seeking a Communications Manager who will direct the Institute's media relations, write news stories for the website and contribute to a planned blog, and serve as managing editor for the semi-annual alumni magazine production. As CIM prepares to launch a significant fundraising campaign, construct a new student housing center and celebrate its centennial, the Communications Manager will make vital contributions to the school's success.

Primary responsibilities

Craft and execute a comprehensive media relations plan that results in local and national placements that lead to increased applications, higher attendance at concerts and a higher profile for the Institute. Create an editorial calendar that focuses on highlighting student and alumni success, celebrating faculty accomplishments and recognizing donor contributions.
Develop relationships with journalists and editors. Prepare colleagues for interviews and attend interviews.
Serve as managing editor for Notes magazine, CIM's semiannual alumni and community facing publication. Run editorial meetings, manage story budget, make assignments, edit contributions and manage any freelance writers or proofreaders.
Gather content for, write and distribute a regular internal good news communication for trustees, faculty and staff.
Engage with faculty and students to surface news about students and alumni; conduct interviews and develop news items, features, etc., as appropriate.
Write compelling news releases, news stories for the website, articles and feature stories for Notes magazine, and blog posts.
In collaboration with Director of Marketing and Communications, advise colleague across the institution on internal and external messages. Serve as a trusted resource for leadership.
With marketing team colleagues, contribute content for social media and student recruitment emails.
With marketing and admissions team colleagues, develop ideas and outlines for video content used in a variety of channels. Collaborate with video producer.
Additional Responsibilities

Manage speaking scripts for events including Commencement, Honors Convocation and the Annual Meeting.
Contribute as part of a busy, creative team.
Manage projects related to CIM's overall goals.
Attend CIM concerts and events as needed, which may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree required; studies in communications, journalism or related field preferred
3-5 years of experience in communications, marketing or a related field
Demonstrated success in media placement
Exceptional attention to detail and superior proofreading skills
Ability to write in a variety of styles and voices to meet wide-ranging needs
Experience with or interest in classical music is a significant plus
