Cleveland Botanical Garden -- Interpretive Media Intern

The intern will have the opportunity to draw connections between the arts and communications world and a non-traditional museum space, such as a public garden. Interns will have the unique opportunity to think outside of the box while researching and brainstorming appropriate media for outdoor exhibits and living collections. Through corresponding with public garden professionals around the country, the intern will develop professional communication and researching skills. The institution will benefit by having a fresh, outside perspective as to how we can engage our audiences, using diverse interpretive methods and media, in our unique spaces. The intern’s extensive research and planning, at a time of pivotal growth in the organization, will allow Holden Forests and Gardens to hit the ground running to develop an effective and meaningful experience for our visitors.

The final project that the intern will complete will be to develop a suggested interpretive media plan for formal garden spaces at The Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden. To complete this, the intern will need to begin by researching interpretive media techniques and methods used at public gardens and similar museum spaces around the country. This will require contacting and gathering information from institutions via email and phone call. Further, the intern will compile a resource, vendor, and budget list for various interpretive mediums to help create a thorough, suggested media plan to present to the Education Department and other members of the Leadership Team.

Skills: The intern must be a proactive, self-starter, comfortable with working independently and corresponding with professionals on-site and at other organizations, via site visits, telephone and email. Intern must have experience and proficiency in a Windows/PC work environment, as well as strong organization skills, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude. The intern should also demonstrate an interest in non-traditional museum spaces, such as botanical gardens and arboreta. Intern must also be willing to use their personal laptop computers.

Projects include:
- Researching interpretive media across various institutions
- Research orchestrating installations of new media, including implementation costs
- Create and present a sugggested implemenation plan 

This position pays $12/hr, 28 hours a week for 9 weeks. In addition, you will receive a $580 stipend for completing the Arts Intern component of the program. Visit the Program Details page for more information.
