“Kids Love Musicals!” Teaching Artist Job Description

The Musical Theater Project (TMTP) is seeking one (1) part-time teaching artist. The position calls for an actress with teaching skills who is capable of playing multiple characters from “The Wiz” in a classroom environment, as well as other musicals as assigned. “The Wiz” is a retelling of the L. Frank Baum children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” in the context of contemporary African-American culture. The teaching artist will serve in the following capacity as an independent contractor:

Embrace TMTP’s core values that advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Perform and teach in-person, interactive musical theater lessons in assigned area schools with students grades K–4
Lead classroom activities from three provided lesson plans of:
“The Wiz”
“The Wizard of Oz”
Either “Cinderella” or “Peter Pan” (TBD)

Schedule:
Usually 4 days per week, consisting of two different schools each week
Up to four (4) classes taught per day; same classes each day
Most weeks from late January – late May 2023
Work hours are during school days, typically falling between 8am – 3pm
Each musical has a 2-day lesson plan
All contracted schools are located within northeast Ohio
Compensation: $250/school
Artist will be partially compensated for any Covid-related cancelations
Paid mandatory rehearsals held in Lakewood as follows:
Jan. 30: 6pm – 10pm
Jan. 31: 6pm – 10pm
Feb. 2: 6pm – 10pm
Feb. 3: 6pm – 9pm
Feb. 4 & 5: mutually agreeable brush-up (as needed)

Qualifications:
Minimum one year of arts education outreach experience with elementary school children, including serving diverse student populations preferred
Proficiency in vocal musical theater
High school degree required; college experience welcomed but not required
Outgoing, people-oriented person with outstanding interpersonal skills
Pass BCI background check (paid for by The Musical Theater Project)
Have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, clean driving record
Ability to teach masked, socially-distancing children in a classroom setting while wearing a mask (if masking is called for) at the time of residencies

Prepare 16-bar ballad and 32-bar up-tempo song
Provide own prerecorded musical tracks (or sing acapella)
Can play on artists’ own phone/device, or on our provided CD player or Bluetooth speaker
