Summary The Art Therapist is responsible for providing art therapy services for the Art Therapy Studio and contracting agencies. Major areas of responsibility will include providing individual or group art therapy to those with special emotional, behavioral, cognitive or physical needs. The Art Therapist will also be an advocate for art therapy in the industry and in the communities we serve.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.


  • Plans and conducts assessments and art therapy sessions with individuals and with groups.
  • Sets appropriate art therapy goals.
  • Assesses art therapy goals consistently for progress.
  • Understands and applies use of art media for services, using art as primary mode for therapeutic interventions.
  • Provides insight and guidance to Art Therapy Studio staff as part of the Art Therapy Studio treatment team.
  • When assigned to an off-site agency:
    • Maintains relationship with on-site contact person or caseworker.
    • Provides regular communication with Art Therapy Studio Clinical Director regarding progress at site.
  • Attends treatment team meetings as required by agency.
  • Maintains Art Therapy Studio stats/billing sheets and turns in on the first of each month.
  • Serves as primary contact person for caseworker, parents, clients, and transportation personnel regarding scheduling, cancellations, and all client information.
  • Follow Art Therapy Studio and site-specific policies and operating protocols including knowledge of referral system, charting, discharge planning, etc. as well as specific safety and emergency evacuation procedures, appropriate client interaction, and proper reporting of incidents.
  • Prepares and presents professional education workshops and presents other professional education workshops for agency as requested.
  • When assigned to Discover the Artists (DTA):
    • Develops and teaches community based art therapy programs and “Discover the Artist” classes.
    • Ensures minimum enrollment by calling clients each quarter.
    • Promotes classes to increase number of clients enrolled in each class.
    • Organizes and mounts client art shows one – three times annually.
  • Maintains art therapy board certification.
  • Manages direct and indirect hours efficiently and appropriately.
  • Completes administrative reports in a timely manner (statistics, billing, goal sheets, attendance sheets, community outreach forms, time sheets, etc.)
  • Maintains orderly Studio space and supplies.
  • Requests and orders supplies as needed within budget.
  • Maintains client artwork and records in compliance with American Art Therapy Association standards and Art Therapy Studio policies.
  • Schedules, orients, and supervises volunteers and students as needed.
  • Develops and delivers presentations to promote art therapy to community groups, potential donors, and to area social service agencies as needed; writes articles to promote art therapy and the organization.
  • Attend clinical staff meetings and full staff meetings.
  • Engages in clinical supervision.

Education and/or Experience 

Master degree in Art Therapy required; ATR, Board Certification within one year of employment for full time employees or two for part time employees.  Specialized training in areas of service a plus.  Experience working with diverse client populations required.  Experience in a not-for-profit organization is preferred.

Outstanding communication skills; strong writing skills; strong public speaking skills; effective interpersonal and team communication skills


Computer Skills

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail and internet

Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and implement programs that achieve organizational objectives.  Ability to foster/maintain a positive and team oriented work environment; working knowledge of art therapy clinical policies, procedures and ethics. Ability and willingness to represent the organization at events and meetings that are outside of normal business hours.
