Working Women is the inaugural exhibition for Gerte Hacker and Elise Newman as Archived Artists at the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve. Hacker and Newman made a living off their art in Ohio at a time when it was rare for women to do so.
Gerte Hacker studied painting at CIA but switched to enamels in the 1950’s to support her daughter and developmentally disabled son after her husband’s death. A marketing wizard, Hacker sold her work to department stores across the country and gained international renown for her craftsmanship and unique enamel renderings.
