“Can you name 5 women artists?” Since 2016, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has been asking this question on social media in March during Women’s History Month. Using the hashtag #5WomenArtists, the campaign calls attention to the fact that women have not been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. This March, join Samantha Baskind, art historian and Professor of Art History at Cleveland State University, to learn the names of three groundbreaking women artists who every American should know. Explore the work of Edmonia Lewis, the first African American sculptor to achieve national and international prominence; Judy Chicago, whose name is synonymous with early feminist art and has been challenging the male-dominated art world since the 1970s; and, Sonia Benjamin is a painter originally from Bombay, India, now living in the US, whose work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in the predominantly Hindu and Muslim India.
