Threads – One Stitch at a Time

Threads – One Stitch at a Time springs from a mentorship and bond between an established 52 year old White man who’s a professional musician and a 16 year old African-American young man who’s an aspiring artist. What brings them together is a child’s need of support during trying times. He’s “America’s Most Wanted“, “Erik Killmonger”; and struggles everyday with racism, anger, a single parent household, family domestic violence, bullying and negative risk taking. What keeps them apart is race and privilege.

It’s a compelling story that presents all too common questions based on race. Who has the right to be a mentor? Who is the mentor, and who is the mentee? Are intergenerational relationships possible? Are there parts of culture that cannot be shared and appreciated? How do we foster opportunities for connection and collaboration? Are we more alike than different?
