As part of the Cleveland Institute of Art’s (CIA) 2023 Faculty Exhibition, a quartet directed by Liberal Arts adjunct professor Matthew Kiroff will present a concert of improvised music.
The quartet will include Chinese guqin and guzheng (visiting artist Brian Grimm), Renaissance virginal (Matthew Kiroff) and two bass flutes (Michael Billings and visiting artist Molly Jones).
The ensemble will employ a plethora of avant garde performance techniques, thus re-contextualizing the rolls of these traditional instruments. Of particular interest will be the group’s use of micro-tones, gleaned from Arabic maqam (modal practice) and transformed via modernist harmony.
