The Ascent

The last movie made by Ukrainian-born filmmaker Larisa Shepitko (she died in a 1979 car crash at age 41) is one of the great Soviet masterpieces.

Three Ukrainian Masters

VOSKHOZHDENIE

USSR, 1977, Larisa Shepitko

Shot in stunning b&w and set in frigid Belarus during WWII, the film focuses on two Russian soldiers who are captured by the Nazis while foraging for food. They must summon the moral, physical, and spiritual strength to face their captors heroically. Unforgettable. Subtitles. DCP. 109 min. www.janusfilms.com/films/1976
