Spring Salamandering at the Lost River Farm

Join Dr. Tim Matson, Curator of Vertebrate Zoology, Roberta Muehlheim, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Zoology, and Garrett Ormiston, GIS and Stewardship Specialist for Natural Areas for a special curator-led night hike!

The forest at night is the best place to be if you want to experience the sights and sounds of early spring! We will hike through a brand-new conservation easement protected by the Museum and explore the many vernal pools and channel ponds at the site. We will search for signs of breeding frogs and salamanders that are using these wetlands on the floodplain of the wild and scenic Ashtabula River. We’ll also listen for owls and other animals of the nocturnal forest.

LOCATION
We will assemble at the preserve, 4311 Gageville-Monroe Rd., Kingsville, OH 44048. Pull off on the driveway at this address. The driveway leads back (about a quarter mile) to a parking area on the preserve.
FIELD TRIP INTENSITY
Moderate – There is a trail system on the property, but expect wet, muddy conditions at this time of year. Hike leaders will venture into the wetlands but will bring discoveries to the shore for participants to see.
WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING
Waterproof boots are best as we will be visiting wet areas and trails will likely be muddy. Flashlights will be necessary.
