The building, originally known as the Euclid Avenue Temple, built by the Anshe Chesed congregation, is renowned for a collection of famous windows designed and executed by Louis Tiffany of Tiffany & Company. These windows, which represent Jewish history with words and symbols, were left behind by the Anshe Chesed congregation when they relocated to Beachwood and have been carefully maintained and protected by Liberty Hill.
In 1956, the Anshe Chesed congregation sold their temple to Liberty Hill Baptist Church. It was the second Black church to relocate to the prestigious Euclid Avenue.
Cleveland Restoration Society is working to complete a National Register of Historic Places nomination for Liberty Hill. This work is part of the Pathways to National Register Recognition for Cleveland’s Black Churches project, funded by the National Park Service Underrepresented Communities Grant Program via the Ohio History Connection. As part of this grant project, CRS staff are in the process of completing a history/architecture survey of 20 Black churches in Cleveland.
Please note that while there is an elevator in the building, it has limited capacity. Guests will be encouraged to use the stairs.
