Cleveland’s medieval music ensemble, Trobár, revives a 13th-century French proto-musical with all of its attendant antics.
A beautiful and savvy shepherdess, her dopey but devoted shepherd paramour, and their village friends encounter a villainous knight with evil intentions. Full of witty banter, toe-tapping tunes, and silly antics, this 13th-c. proto-musical by Adam de la Halle, in English adaptation by Lucy Cross and Allison Monroe, proves itself a timeless comedy with a serious undercurrent addressing privilege and power dynamics.
