ADMIRAL LAUNCH DUO
Patrick O’Malley – Thaumaturgy (2014)
Angélica Negrón – Still Here (2017)
The Admiral Launch Duo plays a set of new music for harp and saxophone featuring works by Patrick O’Malley and Angélica Negrón. O’Malley describes Thaumaturgy as “a collection of three short movements on the theme of magic, as the title implies. The goal was to compose music that explores both the beautiful and bizarre aspects of the instruments.” In her program note, Négron explains that “Still Here explores the idea of trespassing from the perspective of emotionally abusive relationships where there’s an intrusion of personal space and a boundary violation within a complex loving relationship. It considers contradictory feelings of loss, love, frustration, desperation, guilt and codependency and the role of trauma in people’s lives.”
Harpist Jennifer R. Ellis and saxophonist Jonathan Hulting-Cohen transcend the traditional boundaries of their instruments by creating an entirely new and beautiful sound shimmering with contrast, warmth, and virtuosity.
