Reporting From Where We Live

Reporting From Where We Live is a 12-week program that begins with training. Six training sessions are delivered mostly through virtual classes for Clevelanders who want to learn the art of reporting and work with an editor on a story that will ultimately be published in The Land. We ask any Cleveland area residents who are interested to apply. Applications are reviewed and finalists are selected to submit a short, 1-2 paragraph story idea or pitch before being accepted into this free program.

The goal? Many Cleveland neighborhoods are not well represented in the media. To turn that around, we need residents to help tell the stories of their own communities and become community journalists who are paired with The Land’s professionals. Tapping into the deep knowledge people have about their own communities, we train and support residents to translate that knowledge into great stories in The Land.

In 6 training sessions, participants will learn things like what is news, the difference between a news story and a feature, how to write an effective lead, and how to prep interview questions. Upon completion of the course, students will have knowledge of the basic tools of news reporting and the confidence to go out into their community to cover stories that matter. The Land welcomes its community journalists who have completed the course and published their first articles to continue contributing stories even after the course concludes.

This program is for Cleveland area residents. All participants who are selected will be paid a stipend of $300 and are expected to attend every class, do the homework, and write an article for publication in The Land. We are excited to work with community residents to get their work published!
