Ilya Muromets

Presented by Cleveland Institute of Art and The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque at The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, Cleveland OH

Feb 04 2023
Ilya Muromets

Based on an Old Russian oral epic, this colorful, sweeping medieval pageant (in Sovscope!) concerns a heroic, 11th-century warrior who battles wind demons, ruthless pagan invaders, and a fire-breathing, three-headed dragon.

aka THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON

USSR, 1956, Aleksandr Ptushko

Aleksandr Ptushko’s fantastical 1959 folk tale Sampo proved such a hit with our audience in October that we have decided to program another newly restored fantasy adventure by this Soviet FX wiz who was the USSR’s answer to Walt Disney and Ray Harryhausen. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 87 min. www.deafcrocodile.com/ilya-muromets-the-sword-the-dragon/
