Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Maltz Museum

Each year, the Friends of the Maltz Museum honor the memory of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust and celebrate those who lived to tell harrowing stories of survival. Join us for films, lectures, and personal accounts of heroism on this important day.

1PM – Film Screening of LOST TOWN
Lost Town tells the story of one man’s obsessive search to get closer to his deceased father by uncovering the story of his family’s town of Trochenbrod, the only all-Jewish town ever to exist outside of Palestine. Trochenbrod’s 5,000 Jews were obliterated by the Nazis, except for 33 townspeople who escaped the massacre there. This personal search triggered a resurgence of interest in the town and reconnected the few remaining survivors, who hadn’t seen each other in over 60 years. Jewish Clevelander and Holocaust survivor Betty Gold, of blessed memory, was one of those 33 people. She was an active volunteer with the Maltz Museum, and we remember her on this day and through this film.

3PM – THE LEGACY OF ANNE FRANK, WITH HOLOCAUST EDUCATOR FERN LEVY, LECTURE WITH Q&A
The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most widely read pieces of literature from the Holocaust, portraying an intimate look at a young girl’s life in hiding. Fern Levy has dedicated herself to researching Anne’s life and perpetuating her legacy. Join her in a discussion of the founding of the Anne Frank Moral Courage Project, interviews she’s conducted with Anne’s family members and other Holocaust experts around the world, and learn more about Anne, her relationships, and the lessons she left behind that still resonate today.

4PM – THE EMERALD MATCHBOOK, WITH HELEN MARKS AND FAMILY, BOOK TALK AND SIGNING
A story of courage, serendipity, and sacrifice, The Emerald Matchbook is the true-life story of Chaya, a Jewish child born just before the German invasion of 1941, who survives against all odds. At once heartbreaking and uplifting, The Emerald Matchbook allows young readers to share the real-life journey of one of the war’s youngest survivors — one that illustrates the full spectrum of human nature, the true meaning of maternal devotion, and the extraordinary measures taken by the war’s unsung heroes, the “righteous among the nations.” The Emerald Matchbook is based on the life of our very own volunteer and Holocaust survivor Helen Marks, who will be joined on stage with her daughters for a discussion of the book and how memories can be kept alive across generations
