A Suburban Oasis: The Story of Lower Lake

This exhibit shares the story of Lower Lake from its formation by the North Union Shakers in the 1830s to the work the Doan Book Watershed Partnership is doing today to preserve this local treasure.

There is little evidence of the North Union Shaker sect that once occupied what is now Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights, but their impact on the region lives on through Lower Shaker Lake. Dammed by the Shakers in 1836, this man-made lake powered mills and sustained the North Union community in the 19th century. PARKING INFO

Parking is available in the lot behind the museum. Cyclists may park their bikes at racks near the main entrance. Drivers may park facing the garage. A designated handicapped parking space is located near the ADA ramp and entrance. If the lot is full, visitors may park on the north side of South Park Blvd (opposite the museum).
