Unable to send fugitive John Price back to Kentucky slavery, the federal prosecutors tried 38 Oberlin residents who participated in the rescue, under the Federal Fugitive Slave Law. Ultimately, two were convicted, Charles Langston and Simeon Bushnell, and the rest were released back to resume their lives in Oberlin.
Bodwin Theatre produced a video telling the story of the 1858 “Oberlin Wellington Rescue,” in which town residents rose up to defy southern slavecatchers and secure the freedom of John Price, a fugitive from southern slavery.
