2nd Annual Mini Wacipi (Pow Wow)

Saturday, May 19th – Grand Entry @ 1pm

Due to growing up in an urban environment, and located in a state with zero Federally Recognized Tribes, our Native American community can feel a disconnect between themselves and their culture. This causes a significant ripple effect, beginning with the loss of cultural identity and self-esteem, which presents itself more often in our youth. By giving our youth the avenue to build community and reinforce traditional knowledge encourages them to be proud of their culture. It raises our children up so they do not feel ashamed. Rather, they are empowered to stand up for their heritage and community. With that goal in mind, LENAC began to host cultural classes.

With financial grant support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and Neighborhood Connections, the Lake Erie Native American Council (LENAC) hosted weekly culture classes from October 2017 through May 2018. These classes taught area Native American youth and adults how to dance; and their parents how to bead, make regalia and moccasins. This Mini Wacipi is meant to showcase the hard work of our Native youth, their parents, and LENAC leadership and volunteers over the last several months!
