Position:                     Executive Director

Reports To:               Board of Trustees

Position Summary:   Provides management and conceptual leadership for the International Women’s Air & Space Museum in conformance with the policies and objectives established by the Board of Trustees with the assistance of committees, staff and volunteers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership in the management of a dynamic museum organization. Directs and participates in fundraising and other development efforts, marketing, development of strategic vision, collections, general management, financial management and fostering volunteer/board/city relations.
  2. Utilizes traditional print, social, and other forms of new media to bring visitors to the museum and foster museum growth.
  3. Provides the vision and personal leadership for the museum’s growth and development; develops strategies and initiatives to fulfill the museum’s mission, increase its audience and ensure its financial stability and growth.
  4. Effectively manages museum staff within the policies of the Board of Trustees by hiring, supervising and evaluating all employees of the museum.
  5. Administers, directs and oversees all public relations and community relations efforts; serves as the official spokesperson of the museum to the public.
  6. Administers, directs and oversees all fundraising, membership and earned income operations and efforts.
  7. Oversees all museum education efforts and public programs functions.
  8. Oversees the operation of the museum’s gift shop, as well as the maintenance, display and general welfare of the museum’s collection in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards.
  9. Communicates regularly with the Board of Trustees regarding museum operations. Where appropriate, develops proposals for review and approval by the Board of Trustees, including current and long-range program and facility plans.
  10. Works with the Treasurer to develop the annual budget, and reviews and monitors investments and the museum’s investment policy.
  11. Represents the museum in local, state, regional and national museum organizations. Maintains strong community relations through involvement in various community organizations and events.
  12. Maintains an awareness of current developments in the museum profession.

This is a hands-on position, and the successful candidate must be willing to be involved in all aspects of operating the museum.  The successful candidate will possess:

  • At least a college degree or equivalent work experience; museum studies a plus.
  • Experience with non-profit policies and governance.
  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing.
  • Knowledge about, or willingness to learn, artifact preservation and handling in accordance with current museum trends and methods.
  • Competency with QuickBooks, Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
  • Experience with program and event planning.

The candidate’s skills and qualities should also include:

  • The ability to lead and inspire others, working cooperatively with a small staff. The candidate must demonstrate that he or she is able to work independently and is self-motivated, yet is able to function effectively with a team.
  • Passion for the museum’s mission.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Creativity and the ability to be flexible, and to improvise when needed.
  • The ability to network comfortably and create partnerships with governmental allies, as well as regional and national historic and other organizations.
  • Strong ethics, work ethic and commitment to the organization.
  • Comfort with public speaking, and the ability to represent the museum in a professional manner in public settings, as well as to create an enjoyable experience for guests of all ages at the museum or museum-related functions.
