The Magic Lantern Society of the United States and Canada (holding its bi-annual convention in Cleveland) will re-create yesteryear’s lantern shows with live performances utilizing authentic 19th-century equipment and hand-painted slides.

Where did the movies come from? Sophisticated glass-slide projectors known as “magic lanterns” were the direct predecessor of the cinema, reaching the height of their popularity during the 1890s. Encompassing travelogues, temperance stories, moral lessons, fairy tales, comic views, and popular songs and poems, lantern shows are a treat for all ages. ADMISSION INFO

Special admission $12; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25-13 $9; kids 12 & under $5. No passes. 

Face masks, though always recommended, must be worn by filmgoers only when the CDC’s community risk level for Covid in Cuyahoga County is HIGH. Visit cia.edu/covid for the current community risk level and see the “Face Coverings” section for our detailed mask requirements.

As a reminder, filmgoers can park for free in Lot 73 and in the Institute’s annex lot, and should enter CIA via nearby Entrance C. Click here for a map.
